Slowly But Surely

Slowly But Surely

Have you ever come across someone who just really needs a reality check? They think they rule the world and nobody can tell them they are wrong. These days we are calling them Karens. These are the entitled bullies that think that can get away with anything just because they want something a certain way.
“Matthew” ran into a group of girls that met all the requirements to be so-called Karens and decided he would dish out whatever was coming to them.

In the ‘70s, Matthew’s grandparents came over to Canada from Italy and made the advantageous decision to open a restaurant. Matthew had “been working in the restaurant since he was 15” and took over after his parents retired. He made sure to remodel the place to suit the times, “changed the logo, reached out to local and national papers to put out ads, and invited food critics and bloggers.”

All good things take time though, right? This was the case for Matthew’s family legacy and he was terrified that he had ruined their life-long investment and his inheritance. Slowly but surely, his dreams became a reality and the restaurant became a hot spot! All it took was a “local semi-famous YouTuber featuring the place in a video” and the masses started flooding in. It was finally busy! Even on days, most restaurants would consider slow days. All of Matthew’s hard work seemed to be paying off generously. Famous people were making appearances frequently enough that Matthew had a VIP section and would have a “special high profile chef come in for those guests.” However, this is the food industry people, and we all know there has to be someone who tries to be sneaky and entitled.

I'm Sorry, But Who Are You?

I'm Sorry, But Who Are You?

By now the place was packed all the time and a person “would have had to make reservations in July to get a table in December.” This took a lot of work and Matthew did not sit idly by while other people worked for him. Matthew made sure to be involved as much as possible, especially wherever was necessary. “Even if that meant greeting people, busing tables, or even mopping the floors.” However, if there were any “high profile guests or an event,” he would make sure to stick to his owner-duties.

On one spectacular night, a gaggle of women came into the restaurant, well okay six ladies came in. One of them was obviously the leader, “Kandy,” and seemed to be a bit older than the others. Maybe “she was one of the other girls’ older sisters?” But age does not always mean maturity as we shall soon see.

Matthew “was greeting at the door” when the girls came in with Kandy exclaiming “how awesome this place is, the food is amazing, and there might even be celebrities here.” Kandy requested a table for six from Matthew, who replied asking, “Of course can I please get the name on the reservation?”
Kandy tried to reassure him by saying, “Oh, I didn’t make one but it’s ok the owner is a personal friend of mine, he said he always has one or two tables that he keeps open for special guests and said we can have one of those tonight.”

Matthew knew it was a possibility to have a high-profile guest come in at the drop of a hat, but there was just one problem. He didn’t recognize her at all and had definitely not told her she could have a VIP table on a whim. Kandy was obviously “trying to get in without a reservation but she literally picked the worst person she could possibly try this on.”

Matthew stated, “I am sorry but we can not seat anyone without a reservation as you can see we do not have any seats available.”

It wasn’t hard to see how busy the place was and Matt didn’t want to “embarrass her in front of the other girls she was with.” He didn’t shove it in their faces that he was the owner and was calmly explaining he didn’t have a table if they didn’t have a reservation. All of his politeness was soon to go out the window though. These were not just normal young women that would try to get a seat and then accept defeat with grace. They were Karen’s, and they were about to show why.

Option Number Three

Option Number Three

Kandy was not going to leave quietly and she was determined to get that table, no matter the scene she would have to make. And boy what a scene. “She said out loud to one of the other girls to take a picture of me, that she would speak to the owner and make sure I’m either cleaning the toilet or fired by the end of the week.” She obviously had no idea who she was talking to and the implications of that. It was clear she would need to be put in her place. Now the other girls started going along with Kandy saying things like, “yeah kiss your minimum wage job goodbye.” Were these girls accomplices or unknowing aggravators in Kandy’s scheme? Either way these were terrible things to say to a person. Did that stop them though? I wish.

Kandy wasn’t quite finished and went on ranting, “Look you can just give us a table or I can make life very difficult for you, this is not worth losing your job.”

She was very bold and tried her absolute best to witch her way into a table. Didn’t her parents ever teach her that kindness goes a lot further than bullying? Matthew was over it. He had worked all day and did not have the energy to deal with a yelling, entitled, 20-something-year-old. He felt like he had three options. The first was to “tell her he was the owner and just call her out on all of this.” The second was to “ just give her the table and let it be.” And the last and most interesting option was to “teach queen B Karen and her little minions a lesson.”

This wouldn’t be a great story if Matt didn’t choose number three. And after being belittled, berated, and bullied for several minutes I think Matt felt like he had earned a little vengeance. He made a show of it, smiling at the girls, and said, “Of course ma’am follow me please,” and led the group to a VIP table meant for the occasional celebrity drop-in.

Matthew apologized for the wait with three rounds of drinks on the house. He also decided to serve them himself since he had a plan. And this plan was not for the light-hearted. Matt was NOT kidding around when he said he would be teaching them a lesson.

Not Today Karen

Matt told the gaggle that he would need an ID and a card to start a tab for the table. Kandy handed them over and “told the baby Karen minions that tonight was on her.” Matthew took their orders for their complimentary drinks and food. He reminded them that the place was packed and “there might be a delay on the food.” They did not seem to care though, all they wanted were those free drinks. But then they started to realize that it really was taking a while after their free three rounds. Kandy demanded that Matt see what was going on. She “had the world's most nasty attitude.” And still, it took another two rounds of drinks before the appetizers came to their table.

Finally, their food was coming and more drinks were being poured for them. They were having a grand time. The finest drinks, the finest food, the finest table. There was just one little detail the girls didn’t realize. They asked to sit in the special section of VIP tables reserved for special guests. And this came with a hefty price tag. The tables themselves were pricey, clients had to pay to reserve them or sit there. It was so exclusive that the section had its own private menu. Matthew had made these menus without prices, called it a “trade secret,” and even if they did have prices, they would still be astronomically higher than the general restaurant seating. Everything was next level compared to a normal restaurant. The drinks were top shelf, the food was high-end specialties such as; “truffle, black caviar, and specially imported west coast oysters.”

Any other time and under different circumstances, this could have been a really awesome night for these girls. I mean, maybe these ladies weren’t as bad as they seemed at first. Although it seems a stretch, did they deserve what was coming to them? Did Matthew have any second thoughts? Yes, actually he did. But only for a moment because the gaggle of Karens did not change their attitudes. They needed a reality check and Matthew was serious about payback. For reference here are some of the things the girls were talking about all night. They asked Matt if he “felt like his life was worthless since all I ever became was a waiter.” Then another server overheard the girls chatting about “how to f with him to the point that they could just do this whenever they wanted and he would know to always give them a table.” And let’s not leave out that one of the baby Karens said, “He's cute, but I would never date a waiter like that; he is such a pushover.”

These girls were way out of line, disrespectful, and completely ignorant. They were relentless all night. If Matthew had been feeling bad at all he didn’t anymore after hearing those comments. And so, it was finally time to give these girls a taste of their own medicine. Here comes “their life lesson.”

Sweet Revenge

Sweet Revenge

It was time for the check, which came to a whopping $4,232 and some change. Matthew had “never seen anyone sober up so quickly.” Kandy our queen b Karen was astonished and immediately asked him to explain. “She called him over instantly and asked if it was some kind of joke.” Matthew took his time and looked over the bill again.

He said, “oh, yes I apologize I will get you the correct bill in a moment.”

She must have felt some sort of “sense of relief thinking she got someone else's bill” or something, but nope! Kandy should have thought twice about how she treated him. And probably shouldn’t have called him an idiot because he came back with another $120 on the check for a special oyster appetizer he had forgotten. Kandy lost her mind.

Matthew made sure to ask the girls “if there is something on this bill that she didn't order.” Even though Kandy and her minions went over the bill meticulously, they couldn’t find a single thing wrong with the bill. They added everything several times just to make sure. Their free drinks were on there as well as everything they had ordered. They couldn’t believe it.

Queen Kandy was shaking in her boots (or most likely her heels) and said, “One second I need to use the washroom.”

Was Kandy going to try and dine-and-dash? Would she leave her minions to deal with the check? Before she could run away, Matthew made sure to subtly remind her that they had her credit card and ID for the bill. Kandy came back from the restroom with a fresh face and “made up a whole story on how the food was awful and the drinks were bad” and then she “demanded that as a bare minimum he should cut the bill in half, with the agreement the baby Karens will chip in even though she originally told them it the night would be on her.” Obviously, this was far from the night these girls had been expecting but were they getting what they deserved? Kandy was trying her best to get this check figured out and “then as if a light bulb went off in her head she again mentioned her relationship with the owner as if it were to give me additional incentive to cut the bill in half.”
Matt stayed calm and said, “No, I can’t change the bill.”

But Kandy had prepared for this and “whipped out her phone and showed him a series of texts” exchanged between herself and a contact labeled “(restaurant’s name) owner.” How had she been texting the owner? What was going on here?

"Cut The Bull Little Girl"

"Cut The Bull Little Girl"

Matthew realized that this was probably just a text conversation between Kandy and one of her minions changed to seem like it was the owner of the restaurant. He said that couldn’t be real and that it wasn’t the right number.
Kandy snapped back, “He has multiple phones for business and stuff of course you don’t know all his numbers!"

“This girl thought of everything,” Matthew thought to himself. She was not going to go quietly. She was obviously used to getting her way all the time and did not appreciate Matthew’s attempts to ruin her night. But Matthew, as the actual owner, was not going to let these Karens treat him this way. This couldn’t have been the first time Kandy and her friends had done something like this. Maybe this would teach them a lesson after all and they would stop their childish antics. Kandy started throwing a tantrum and Matthew had reached his limit. It was time to cut to the chase. Other customers started staring at the girl and this was not the attention his restaurant needed.

“Cut the bull little girl, you don't know the owner, you have never been here before and if you keep yelling I will call the police,” Matt said without the facade.

Kandy was shocked and quickly tried to back peddle. But Matthew was done with her attitude.

He finally made everything crystal clear to her and said, “My grandparents founded this restaurant, my family has been running this place for generations. I have worked here almost my entire life. I am the one and only owner of this restaurant and I have never once seen you or heard of you. And I definitely never made a stranger I don't know and have never met before tonight, any promises.”

You could hear crickets. They were beyond surprised. Matthew assured them that he would be calling the police if they didn’t pay their bill. He also reminded them that he hadn’t even charged them the table fee and given free drinks. Kandy broke down and signed the bill.

Justice had been served. But it wasn’t all said and done quite yet. It was only a couple of days later and someone had come in wanting to speak with Matthew. It turned out to be Kandy’s father, with her cowering behind him. At 20-something, she really should not need her father to clean up her mistakes anymore. He showed the man the CCTV footage of the night, which included his daughter’s tantrum. There was the proof. The girls had eaten the food, drank the drinks, and all their attitude was right there for them to see.

There was nothing more to say. Kandy and her father “stormed out with her and was screaming at her the whole time they were walking away.” Although the girls never came back, Matthew still has a copy of the receipt framed on his desk. Was he in the right? Who’s to say. But in the end, they got what was coming to them and hopefully, they would never belittle anyone in the food industry ever again.
